OUR STORY


On the Street we have one mission: To bring the best of West Coast Cali-Mex cuisine to Eastern North Carolina. Founded in May of 2015, Olvera Street Taqueria is the culmination of years of planning by chef/owner Joe Kavanagh. From our humble beginnings in a small kitchen, we clawed and scraped our way through outdoor pop-up kitchens, street-fair vending and private events for over 3 years before finally getting the doors of our brick-and-mortar store opened on North Street in the blossoming Arts and Cultural District of Downtown Kinston, NC.

Our culinary philosophy is one of simplicity and authenticity. We use the best available ingredients to hand craft, in house, the food Joe grew up eating on the streets of L.A. as a kid. From the food we serve to the street art adorning our walls, Olvera Street aims to bring California to Carolina. We are commited to honoring the Hispanic and Native origins and culinary traditions of Mexican Cuisine while adding our own unique flourishes and flavors inspired by our own culture here in Southeastern North Carolina.

Chef/Owner Joe Kavanagh grew up in the L.A. street food scene, eating the food that would eventually inspire him to open Olvera Street Taqueria in hopes of sharing his love for all things LA with the world. With over 15 years experience in the restaurant business, Joe honed his skills in restaurants ranging from sandwich shops to fine dining. When not elbow deep in the day to day hustle and flow of running Olvera Street, Joe is also a DJ, glass blower and coffee enthusiast.

Eric Coley

Executive Sous Chef

Eric Coley is a native son of the South with roots in traditional southern cuisine and food culture. He cut his teeth in his grandmothers kitchens frying chicken and baking biscuits and in the back yards of his family in the Carolina low-country; cleaning fish, shucking oysters, peeling shrimp and learning the art of whole-hog BBQ. Eric has been cooking professionally for over 8 years and brings his love and knowledge of North Carolina's culinary practices to Olvera Street Taqueria's So-Cal inspired menu. In his free time Eric is a writer, musician and avid salt-water fisherman.
